Google Search is taking another significant leap into the future with its latest updates to AI Mode, an experimental feature designed to handle complex queries and provide more comprehensive, synthesized answers. Building on user feedback, Google announced in early May 2025 that it is expanding access and introducing new capabilities to make AI-powered search more interactive and useful for everyday tasks [1].
Previously available via a waitlist within Google Labs, AI Mode is now immediately accessible to any user aged 18 or older in the United States who opts into the Labs program. Google cited “incredibly positive feedback” from millions of early testers as the driving force behind removing the barrier to entry. Users have reportedly been leveraging AI Mode for longer, more nuanced questions—from understanding complex technical topics to comparing specific options, like pet insurance plans [1].
A key enhancement is the introduction of interactive visual cards directly within AI Mode results, making it easier for users to take action based on the information provided. When searching for local businesses like restaurants, salons, or stores, new “place cards” will surface details such as ratings, reviews, opening hours, and even real-time busyness information. Quick buttons allow users to call the business or get directions directly from the AI-generated response [1].
Similarly, product searches benefit from new “product cards.” These cards display shoppable options complete with images, real-time pricing (including current promotions), shipping details, and local inventory status. This feature is powered by Google’s extensive Shopping Graph, which processes billions of product listings hourly, ensuring the information presented is fresh and reliable [1]. Now, asking AI Mode for “the best foldable camping chair that would fit in a backpack for under $100” can yield a breakdown of recommended products with links to retailers [1, 3].
Recognizing that many searches are part of ongoing projects or research, Google has also addressed the need for continuity. A new history panel is rolling out for AI Mode on desktop. Located on the left side of the screen, this panel allows users to easily revisit previous search topics, review the information AI Mode provided, and seamlessly ask follow-up questions, picking up right where they left off [1, 3].
While AI Mode remains primarily within the experimental Labs environment, Google is beginning to test its integration more broadly. In the coming weeks, a small percentage of U.S. users will start seeing an “AI Mode” tab directly within the standard Google Search interface, signaling a potential future where AI-powered results are a more prominent option alongside traditional links [1, 5].
These updates underscore Google’s commitment to evolving Search beyond a simple list of links into a more conversational, intelligent tool capable of understanding complex intent and assisting users in accomplishing real-world tasks more efficiently.
